Seeking an Alternative to Back Surgery

While there may be a time for discectomies and spinal fusions, when indicated, many fusions are being encouraged without first educating the patient about an alternative to back surgery.

Your spine is not meant to be a stationary object.  A spinal fusion is basically “welding” a section of your spine together using metal and screws. Most commonly, what happens over time, is that the “un-welded” sections now have to compensate, causing further degeneration and, quite often, subsequent surgeries down the road.

Many of us experience back pain at some point in our lives.  We usually ignore it, hope it goes away or, at least, doesn’t get worse.  But when pain becomes chronic and/or the frequency of episodes increases, we expect a doctor to “just fix it”.

Unfortunately, the spine is extremely complex and there isn’t a “one size fits all” answer.  Spinal fusion surgery is a major operation and patients need to consider all options before making a decision.

We feel that a patient, who commits to non-invasive treatments first, usually has the best chance of long term pain relief.

Risks of Spinal Fusion Surgery

  • Nerve damage
  • Pain at the bone graft site.
  • Failure of the fusion, breakage of metal implants, or both.
  • Blood clots that may also lead to pulmonary embolism.
  • Graft rejection.
  • Infection.
  • Continued use of prescription narcotics.

Benefits of Stem Cell Therapy

  • Using your own Adult Stem Cells reduces risk of rejection.
  • May regenerate a degenerative disc.
  • Little to no downtime.
  • Used in conjunction with specialized physical therapy to strengthening the muscles surrounding the spine.
  • Using your own body’s innate healing powers to reduce or eliminate pain.

Adult Stem Cell therapy  and/or Platelet Rich Plasma therapy, commonly referred to as PRP, show great promise in treating chronic back pain.  They are considered non-invasive because they are injection therapies using your own adult stem cells or your own platelets to encourage your body to “self-repair”. These therapies are not required for all conditions, but can be viable alternatives to invasive back surgery for many patients.

There are many non-invasive treatments for back pain.  Our clinic has successfully treated patients using vibration therapy, decompression therapy, physical therapy or chiropractic care.  Often treatments are used in conjunction depending on the patients condition.
