Stem Cell Therapy for Hair Loss

Alopecia, or hair loss, can be devastating.  Most people have tried just about everything, unsuccessfully,  to stimulate new hair growth.  Using a natural treatment like stem cell therapy for hair loss may provide the solution you’re looking for.

Approximately 50 million men and 30 million women in the United States experience partial or complete hair loss. Stress can exacerbate hair loss, which certainly isn’t helpful because losing your hair is, in and of itself,  stressful!

Whatever the reason for your hair loss it can certainly cause a range of emotional and physical concerns. For many, hair loss can affect their everyday life by limiting social activities and, for some, changing their entire personality.  Ask any parent who has a teenager with alopecia, and they’ll tell you how devastating it can be for the entire family.

Hair follicle stem cells are long-lived cells in the hair follicle; they are present in the skin and produce hair throughout a person’s lifetime. They are “quiescent,” meaning they are normally inactive, but they quickly activate during a new hair cycle, which is when new hair growth occurs. The quiescence of hair follicle stem cells is regulated by many factors. In certain cases they fail to activate, which is what causes hair loss.

Using your own adult stem cells, it may be possible to stimulate new hair growth in live hair follicles that, for one reason or another, are currently not producing new hair growth.

One factor contributing to hair loss is a decreased blood supply to hair follicles, which causes a decrease in their function.  Another factor is inflammation.  Injecting your own stem cells into the scalp not only has a very strong anti-inflammatory effect, but may regrow blood vessels, or re-vascularize hair follicles.

PRP, or Platelet Rich Plasma therapy, is more commonly used to treat hair loss.  In our experience this treatment does not have the same “horse power” as stem cell therapy for hair loss.  Once stem cell therapy is used, PRP is a good follow up treatment to re-stimulate the stem cells.

Stem cell therapy for hair loss requires a examination by our physician to determine if the existing follicles have the potential to respond to therapy.  Dr. Moises Irizzary is extremely experienced treating patients with stem cells for hair loss.  He has successfully treated both males and females of all ages.
