Common Injuries

Ultimate Medical Group Glossary (Common injuries)

  1. Rotator cuff injuries can be caused by tendonitis, which is the inflammation of the rotator cuff tendons due to excessive use, or tears, which can be partial or full-thickness and often stem from injuries or degeneration.
  2. Shoulder impingement syndrome occurs when the rotator cuff tendons get pinched under the acromion during movement.
  3. Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, results from the inflammation and tightening of the shoulder capsule, leading to stiffness and pain, which is common after prolonged immobility.
  4. Shoulder bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa that cushions the joint, typically caused by repetitive motion or trauma.
  5. Shoulder instability can result from partial or complete dislocation due to trauma or hypermobility, potentially becoming a chronic issue.
  6. Labral tears are injuries to the labrum, the cartilage ring that stabilizes the shoulder joint, with common types including SLAP tears and Bankart lesions.
  7. Arthritis can manifest as osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease causing cartilage breakdown, or rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune inflammation affecting the joint lining.
  8. Fractures can occur in the clavicle, humerus, or scapula, often due to trauma.
  9. AC joint injuries involve sprains or separations where the clavicle meets the scapula, typically resulting from a fall or direct impact.

Regarding foot pain and injuries:

  1. Plantar fasciitis is characterized by inflammation of the plantar fascia, causing sharp heel pain, particularly in the morning.
  2. Heel spurs refer to bony growth on the underside of the heel, often linked to plantar fasciitis.
  3. Metatarsalgia causes pain in the ball of the foot, commonly observed in runners and individuals with high arches.
  4. Morton’s neuroma is nerve thickening between toes, leading to burning pain or numbness in the forefoot.
  5. Stress fractures are tiny cracks in foot bones, typically resulting from overuse and causing worsened pain with activity.
  6. Flat feet or fallen arches can induce arch, heel, and leg pain, often causing overpronation.
  7. Sesamoiditis is the inflammation of the tiny sesamoid bones under the big toe joint, resulting in pain while pushing off the foot.
  8. Gout leads to sudden, intense joint pain, often in the big toe, caused by uric acid buildup.

Ankle Pain and Injuries:

  1. Ankle sprains involve stretching or tearing of ligaments, often the lateral ligaments, resulting in swelling, bruising, and instability.
  2. Achilles tendinitis is the inflammation of the Achilles tendon at the back of the ankle, commonly seen in runners and athletes.
  3. Achilles tendon rupture is the complete tear of the tendon, leading to sudden pain and an inability to push off.
  4. Ankle fractures are breaks in one or more bones of the ankle joint, frequently caused by falls or trauma.
  5. Tarsal tunnel syndrome is nerve compression similar to carpal tunnel syndrome, causing tingling, burning, or numbness in the ankle and foot.
  6. Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD) involves weakening or tearing of the tendon supporting the arch, potentially causing flatfoot and inner ankle pain.
  7. Osteoarthritis is characterized by the degeneration of cartilage in the ankle joint, resulting in stiffness, pain, and reduced range of motion.
